"New Beginnings!"
January is all about fresh starts - big or small, quiet or bold. For this month’s challenge, I'd love to see photos that capture the feeling of New Beginnings!
Peter Trabant shared how to "form a soap bubble for us"
CAMERA: Set up consists of my trusty Canon R5 with a 100mm f2.8 TT Artisan macro lens and remote control set on “manual”. Settings vary using an ISO of 100 and then adjusting f and as fast a shutter speed as you can as the crystals will be moving around inside the bubble as they first start growing and need to be caught. Camera should be “acclimated” to outside before shooting.
PLATFORM: Anything will do if it is ice-cold…. a handful of snow, iced soda-pop can bottom, glass jar filled with frozen water etc.. Important thing is ice cold and a bit of a cup shape to contain the bubble. Placed on a tripod allows one to move it around and align it with camera and background.
BUBBLE MIX: I’ve used the ready-made soap bubble mixtures from Walmart’s toy section (Bubble Blast Solution-64OZ) successfully as well as made my own using 3-parts water, 1-part soap, 2tbsp sugar and 3tbsp glycerin (Walmart Pharma area). Mixture should be a tad cold but not frozen.
SETTING: This is most important. My best shots have been with a rising sun in the background, so cold mornings at temperatures below 20o work best. Trial and error and practice are needed to obtain best results. One may test setups in a warm environment first by blowing bubbles and photographing inside. Then pipette bubble mix onto your platform and blow a bubble and shoot as the colder it is the faster the crystals will form and dance inside. Good luck!
