HSV Camera Club Summer Seminar Program

JUNE 14th – 6:30-8:00 PM – CLASS AT CHURCH OF CHRIST
Sign up below.

Our June 14th class, led by Kurtis Sutley, will show:

GET IT OFF AUTO!

Our cameras today are fairly smart when we use the auto mode, but what comes out is not always what we envisioned.  No matter what the cost of that well designed tool, the camera still has to guess at what’s in front of it.  Thus, it simply chooses middle of the road settings to cover as much of the possibilities as it can.  Shooting on auto is great for a quick shot--a snap shot--but we sometimes want to decide the effect of the image rather than having the camera decide.

Our June 14th class will show us the first steps in getting off auto while learning the different shooting priority settings: aperture, shutter, manual, including the exposure triangle and how each affects each other.  We might even learn how to use the histogram to correct our shot, which may be as simple as using exposure compensation.  Perhaps you don’t use auto, but you have difficulty in adjusting your shot for the result you want.  This class may be helpful for you also.

We will use our cameras throughout the class in order to understand each of the settings.  Bring your camera and its manual, and please register online so that we know what camera you use.

Also, we will need assistance from experienced members to help with the different camera models. If you are available to help that night, please register online so that we will know your camera model.

JULY 12, 2022 – 6:30-8:00 PM – Church of Christ
ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING WORKSHOP –

Please register below for the Artificial Lighting Class to be led by Robert Sonnen.  You are encouraged to bring a camera and tripods. We will have two set-ups: one for a headshot and one for a still life.  If you prefer and time allows, you can bring your own set-up.  Continuous light will be provided so flashes or adapters for pc connections are not required.  If you want to use your own flash off camera, you can do that but you must know how to set up your camera/flash before coming. No instruction on how to set up an off-camera flash will be provided. Since this will be continuous lighting, tripods are highly recommended. There will be a short discussion about the properties of light and lighting for portraits after which you will be free to take pictures.  We hope to have a live model.

Using Sharpen AI, DeNoise AI, and Gigapixel AI
In this class I will demonstrate the need for, and use of, these three editing applications.  Topaz offers these as a bundle. They also have some other apps, which will not be covered in this class.
I have been using some form of third-party noise reduction, sharpening, and pixel increasing software for over 10 years. In the past, performance was not very predictable, and so, it typically was only used on very noisy or very blurry images.  With the current AI generation of these products, they work much better - amazingly so in many cases - and I use them frequently.
I shoot a 44 megapixel camera and am thrilled with the clarity of image, and sharpness of detail obtained with it. Putting my best images through  Sharpen AI produces astounding image clarity.
Likewise, the DeNoise AI program does a far better job of eliminating noise from high ISO, or low-light images, than the native tools in Photoshop or Lightroom, while still retaining image detail.
Gigapixel AI allows me to blow up images to 40” or larger, or to take a severely cropped image (say 4 megabytes) and make a reasonably sized print of it. Part of the discussion on Gigapixel AI will be a general review of changing a file size, either up or down, for web, print, etc.
The class will be a demonstration format, with handout notes.  You are welcome to bring your computer if you have these apps, and would like some help after class, as time permits.  Or, bring an image on a USB stick and we can see what the software can do for it.
   Hope to see you there.
